Some quick sketches I did in the past weeks and today. It's good to be back in London, there are just so many places I can go and draw :)

Did this 2 weeks ago just outside where I live along the riverside.

Went to the British museum last week and did this quick sketch by their Gift shop.

Went out with Justin today, walked along the Thames by the Tower Bridge.

Did this one super quick as we realized its actually quite cold to sit outside.

Sat at Strada by the river, they have a fabulous view of the Tower Bridge and the Thames.

I went back to Vancouver for 2 weeks last month and went on a road trip with parents to Banff for 5 days. Only did these 2 sketches, was kinda a rushing trip, especially with parents, they always want to get from place to place, wanted to see every single mountain and lake :P Oh well... it was a great trip, the Canadian Rockies were truly amazing, everyone should go visit at least once I think :)

I bought a new fountain pen, as I always wanted, I finally got it, the pink Lamy :) And I did some sketches, I like the uneven ink flow of the fountain pen. Since I have to press slightly harder for the ink to come out, it gives my sketches this comic look.

I tried to paint over my sketch, didn't realise the ink is not waterproof :P so I went back to my Pigma Micron pen for the watercolours. I shall order some waterproof ink next time.

I realize even though we sit so close to each other, I rarely turn around, I would send him instant messages and hear him typing his to me, but we would not turn around, why is that?! A bad habit everyone seems to have in this industry.

I find it extremely hard to paint female portraits, they never look who they were supposed to be, so I'm not even gonna say who this is meant to be, assume this is just some woman portrait I paint off a picture. I still enjoy it alot, especially the colouring part, I wish there is a colouring book for adult water colour enthusiasts, like me :) So I don't have to sketch them myself in order to paint. I do enjoy sketching as well but it can be discouraging when it doesn't turn out looking so womanly.

Went to the Proms at Royal Albert Hall last night, the music was great, I had a great time :) I painted the hall while enjoying the music. I think I really enjoy painting so much more when listening to classical music, shall do that more form now on.

Did this today sitting at Curzon cafe next to work. I really like their cafe, it's never too crowed even during lunch time, nice soft cushion seats, big glass windows, I like the music they play in the background too, it's always air conditioned which is very comfortable especially in this very hot, polluted soho area. Oh I know why no one comes here now, their coffee are more expensive than other places that's true, but I do like their Americano, perfect thickness, I much prefer coming here for a break than the MilkBar everyone goes to, I still not quite sure why everyone goes to MilkBar, their coffee doesn't taste very good (I only drink Americano though, the closest thing I can find to filtered coffee, not many places do drip coffee in london, strange isn't it) and they never fill the full cup, always just give you half cup, staff aren't very friendly either...

Sat we went to the Welcome Collections at Euston Square. This is the view outside their cafe. Don't really like this painting at all, didn't use the colour well, kinda lack of depth :S oh well... though I'd post it anyway,

Later in the afternoon we went to Starbucks at Carnaby street for a rest before dinner.

Did this painting of Angus at 606 club Sat evening, it was a nice Jazz club, I enjoyed the music, food was average. On Sunday, we went to Carluccio's at Canary Wharf again for the best Tiramisu :) It's really a pleasant place to hangout for the afternoon, staff were very friendly, Tiramisu is the best I've had in London.

All of sudden I become obsessed with drawing faces, I just really want to be very good at it but I know it takes practice so I guess I'll just have to draw a lot of them, I'm getting faster though.

It was very hot last Saturday. I went to Canary Wharf station, where all the restaurants are, sat across from "The slug and Lettuce". I've never been there, perhaps it is because of their name, just doesn't sound very delicious :P

This is was in the Soho park at lunch time, some quick gestures. each of them took 30secs to a min. I like when London is sunny and warm so I can just sit outside and draw :D

Japanese Album Vol.01

Finally!!! After 2 months, my first Japanese album moleskine is done! The London Tube project is finally done

I've always been complaining not have enough time to draw, where did all my time gone? I spend average 70 minutes a day being in the tube staring at strangers, so I figured I might as well draw them. It's been hard and weird trust me, how would you feel if you know someone stares at you every 5 seconds? I donno, I've never been stared. Some of them would be very kind and nicely pose for me, many of the others would just pretend they were not aware by simply closing their eyes or starting to read, where few of them would just move away... I only draw the person right in front of me, I guess it's less obvious that I'm staring. Some of these sketches are really bad, like... REALLY BAD! Wrong proportions, extra shoulder/arm, or missing head and feet:( Oh well, I did my best, hope you guys enjoy it too. I think I'll have to do at least 10 books to be able to see the improvement, in the mean time I'll start my second book :)

These are some stuff I did over the past few weeks, just didn't have the chance to upload them. Not the best sketches, wish I can get out more and do more of them, but sadly here in London the weather's not been always pleasant in weekends. Now that it finally is, I'm too busy watching world cup :P

Went Sketching with Edison 2 weeks ago when he's here in London with me.

I always got caught up in details and ended up never finish the whole picture, so I timed myself on this one for 10 minutes from across the street and this is it.

Another timed sketch and somehow I managed to get the prospective totally wrong. Oh well, it's the corner pub I visit at least 3 times a week. It's just around the corner from where I work. Everyone from work goes there. We call it the "Golden usual" place.

Edinburgh Trip

Went up to Edinburgh for the long weekend. It was a nice break from the Soho area in London. Wish it was warmer though, can not believe it is May and it was 3C outside in the evening there. I didn't bring enough warm clothes, had to wear my PJs underneath and everything else I had on top of that. These are few of the sketches from the bunch I did.

I think the water in London are not very watercolour friendly. It's very hard to paint for some reason, the water doesn't seem to stay on the paper, it was never like that in Vancouver :(

Went to the Sandy Bells pub :) It was really an extraordinary experience. Local musicians would spend their Sunday afternoon there performing some folk music. It's like the Sketchcrawl for us people :) But what I found fascinating was somehow those local musicians sat around together with different instruments and manage to play together in perfect harmony without even knowing each other.

On the train back to London, Alper got a new phone on the last day, he could not wait to get to London to play with his stupid new toy :P

Went to Gourmet Burger Kitchen today for lunch with some colleagues. These are the people sat at the table near us. I have to say... I really really love Asian food, I really do. I really can't do burgers for more than once every... 2 months probably. I think gbk is probably one of the decent burger places around but really, It's just too dry and greasy for me. It made me feel kinda sick and gross for the whole afternoon though I only just ate 1/3 of mine :( It's like McDonald's, once in a while I'll crave for it and as soon as I take my first bite I feel like I don't ever wanna eat it again.

This is the new Japanese album Moleskine I bought for a new project. I only just started 2 days ago, the unfolded page is like couple of meters long so I think it's gonna take me awhile to finish (hopefully within 2 months) And then I'll upload a video of the images :) It's gonna be fun, can't wait to get it all done!! ^_^

It's been couple of months. I haven't been updating, in fact I haven't been drawing much. Life got quite busy for the past 3-4 months. I was traveling for quite a bit towards the beginning of this year but everything happened so fast I barely had time to sketch. And then I moved to London 2 months ago for a new job :) Life only got busier after that... Finally I got my internet working at home and a few spare moments to upload some of these sketches I did over the past few months. Looking at them I realize I need to sketch more :(

This is a sketch I wish I had finished. The view from the window of my home in Beijing, we live on 18th floor, this is one side of the street, I kinda miss it only wish I remember what's on the other side of that street :(

I was sick the first month I arrived London, this is the sketch I did when I was waiting in the medical center on a Sunday afternoon.

I did this one last night. Alper was playing Rockband on the sofa looking very serious. To be honest, I think those plastic guitar looks quite ....hm.... let's just say "funny"!

Watercolour really does not go well with the moleskine sketchbook paper. It doesn't stick to the paper and if you put soap on it, it become like marker, colour get absorbed completely the moment they get in contact with the paper, you can not work with it or wash it off or anything! And it bleed thru badly...

It is my digital camera, I found it relaxing and easier to focus on what the mentor is talking while I was drawing :) It is exactly what I'm trying to achieve by keeping this journal, I want to draw to relax and have fun! I've started Yoga lately, I bought this bag together with the mat back almost 4 years ago when I was in film school, cos I liked it is long with two straps on the side where I could roll up my life drawing pad and put it there, the yoga mat was just sitting in my closet collecting dust till 2 weeks ago I decided I should try Yoga. I'm glad this bag and the mat finally get to do what they meant to be doing.

Last night I was sitting on my bed talking on the phone, there is the long dressing mirror at the end of the bed where I can sort of see myself cos it's kinda far. I decided to start a new moleskine, this time with the moleskine cahier pocket size. The reason is I always hesitate to draw faces with ink on my sketchbook cos I don't wanna ruin the good quality pages, with this cahier journal, all the pages are just plain notebook paper, I might be able to feel more free to draw, we'll see about that. As for what's gonna be in this particular journal, I thought about only doing self-portraits but then there is a very high chance that I will get sick of my own face before halfway thru this book, so I donno yet, follow my heart...

Sarah got off work at 9pm tonight and we went to our favorite hangout place in Richmond, the Cactus Club and ordered our favorite food, the Rocket salad, didn't order our favorite drink, the Brazilian though cos Heineken was on special tonight :P Anyway, this, somehow turn out to look more like a self-portrait than Sarah, she said the same. Maybe I see myself in her?! I'm still hesitate trying to draw human face with Ink... next time! I will do it next time!

Grouse Mountain/Capilano River

While the sun is still here, I went to Grouse Mountain with my parents today. Both of them are very impatient, it was hard to convince them to just sit and chill for 10-20 minutes so I could do some sketches, well... I did what I could:

This is my dad, when we were stuck in the traffic on Lion's gate bridge on the way home I started this sketch, but then we passed the bridge before I could finish it so I'll have to finish it some other time in his car.

I don't think I have actually done a self portrait before. I just don't quite like the idea of uglifying myself. So, as how I expected, This doesn't really look like me, I'm just glad it doesn't look too ugly, I'll try again maybe with ink next time.

Today I joined the Sketchcrawl 24th meet up @Vancouver. It is a world wide event where artists from different places meet up locally and spend a day sketch around in the city. It was quite fun today and I got to meet some very talented artists too:) Mr.Sun didn't do us the favor, only showed up a little bit, but it didn't rain though. I bought myself a bigger size moleskine sketchbook today, sometimes the pocket size just isn't quite enough for the bigger pictures :) Being very excited I went in Sophie's next door afterward. A very retro diner, sometimes there is a long line, I tried once before, didn't like the food. This was my second time, didn't order food this time, other reason was I'm kinda against the idea of eating alone in a restaurant, eating to me is a social activity seems. However when I have my moleskines, it's a different story, I kinda like being by myself nowadays more than I ever was. This bald man in my sketch demanded me to turn my sketchbook over and show him, so I did and he didn't comment, hm.... maybe he didn't like that I drew him bald? Anyway, wish that I could have more time to colour it there, it is a colourful and fun place to draw, sure I will revisit it someday, so maybe I'll colour it then:)

I never really like doing sketches of landscapes or buildings. I don't really like painting trees. When I was in boarding school in U.K. I took Art for 2 years in A-level, My final year project I did trees, cos at that time I thought trees are the easiest to draw and you can't really go wrong with it, not like portraits. So I painted trees for the whole year, oil/charcoal/ink, you name it, in the end I just got so sick of everything I made my final piece a tree made of blowing ink on paper. Basically I just poured some dark ink on paper and blow it with a straw into tree branches shape or something like that I don't quite remember, all I remember was that my cheeks and my whole face hurt like crazy after 2 hours of blowing into the straw. I don't remember ever painted trees after that. Then I got in University doing Architecture so all I did was going places sketching buildings, when we went on field trips, sketchbooks would get graded, I hate that, so I never really enjoy sketching buildings either back then ...

... till now

Ok, that was a little story of how horrible an artist I am. Anyhow, I must say I really enjoy painting this one, though I hate how the trees turn out and I forgot to paint the chimney :D oh well...

These are some Dr. Sketchy's drawings I did tonight. It was my first time, I had tons of fun!! The model was Red from a local band Pink Flamingo Burlesque. Love all her poses, very sexy and creative. If you have never been to Dr.Sketchy should come next time on Oct 4th. Or if you are not from Vancouver should check out your local Dr.Sketchy's schedule :)

I really like to draw my own room. Maybe it's because it is always messy, well... I'm a clean person, I just have a lot of stuff, actually... I don't have a lot of stuff, I just have a very small room, I like small room so I don't have to walk as far to get what I want... so... in fact I'm just a lazy person. Believe it or not, drawing my own room actually help me find stuff, when I draw, I sometimes see stuff I don't even know existed or stuff I thought I had lost:)

Wanted to try out my new watercolour syringe brush I bought the other day, the one you can put water at the syringe and have a brush at the tip to paint, it's convenient for painting on location but since it's been raining the whole day so I didn't really go anywhere so I drew my favorite appliance from the kitchen. Unfortunately I didn't quite master the skill of mixing grey from green,blue and red so this is the best I could do till I buy the black colour so I don't have to mix anymore :P

And it was sort of a failure :( Well, for those who doesn't know, don't try water colour on a moleskine sketchbook, get the moleskine watercolour book! I had a moleskine watercolour book, just didn't think of it :( Anyway, the paper doesn't take water all that well, it's bleeding thru too.

Just spent a weekend at Seattle for PAX(Penny Arcade Expo) the video game expo thingy. It was quite a fun experience I must say, though it was a little too geeky/freeky for me and a lot of guy jokes around but still I saw a lot of awesome games and got to try some of them. I did a lot of waiting-in-the-line so I managed to sketch some stuff, I wish I had done more cos a lot of the people there just hold a pose and freeze when they play games:P oh well... check out my facebook album for photos I took^_^

This is a terrible sketch of Dylan, doesn't look like him at all :( I feel sorry for him. And weird, somehow almost all the people in my sketchbook look Asian.

This guy is the voice actor for Guybrush in Monkey Island. He's such a nice guy, he signed my sketch even though it looks kinda crappy, he also took a photo of it with his own camera, that made my day :)

Couple of days ago, I bought a book from this bookstore I went while I was waiting for my mom. "An illustrated life" by Danny Gregory. This book has changed me in so many ways. For the longest I was convinced I can not draw, it would be a waste of time if I even try, neither would I enjoy it. This book has convinced me otherwise. It is basically a book with full of sketches and illustrated journals from all sorts of people and stories about them, Some of those people have never even been to an art school. You don't really have to be an artist to enjoy drawing. Don't ever feel shamed of your sketches even they look like they are from a 3-year-old kid, it's all about expressing yourself. keeping an illustrated journal strike me as fantastic idea, I went to buy a Moleskine from Opus, luckily they are on sale till end the Aug. For those who never enjoyed drawing in their lives like me, maybe should go and check out this book, it is a very inspiring book!
